For a couple of years now, the Cleveland Guardians and their fans have been using the term “Guards Ball” to refer to their style of play.
The term is generally associated with a gritty, hard-nosed type of play in which defense, pitching and “small ball” are prioritized.
Guards Ball takes pride in playing the game “the right way,” with relentless effort and a huge inner drive to overcome adversity.
The phrase emphasizes a never-give-up attitude, among other things.
It’s not hard to see why fans rallied behind this way of seeing the game, especially when the roster aligned with this philosophy.
Guards Ball helped Cleveland make it to the American League Championship Series last year.
This year, however, the Guardians are 40-43, struggling to keep their head above water.
Their lineup has no punch, and when the pitching staff isn’t as solid as it was last year, that creates more problems.
Analyst Tom Withers explained how the term has deteriorated in the eyes and minds of fans.
“‘Guards Ball’ has devolved from an identity to a punch line. An inspiring team that played with such grit a year ago is currently flat, boring, and often unwatchable. So many of the same problems (let’s start with right field) have lingered far too long. Offense nonexistent,” Withers wrote on X.

Basically, the sustainability of the success achieved under the Guards Ball philosophy is in question.
Perhaps a better way to look at things would be to embrace some of its traits but find ways to bring in elite offensive talent with power.
That, and the ability to get on base, are the keys to any good offense, and right now, the Guardians are bad at both.
Of course, hard-nosed play with high effort is always welcome, as is playing good defense and pitching effectively and efficiently.
But a team needs to be able to score runs consistently, and right now, the Guardians are not doing it.
