It’s been years since the Cleveland Guardians changed their name.
It was a huge deal at the time, and it had been an ongoing discussion for years.
That’s why, even though President Donald Trump has tried to re-ignite the debate, analyst Tony Rizzo doesn’t see the team changing back.
“I don’t think the Guardians are gonna go back to the Indians name anytime soon. I don’t know what the president can do to us. Here’s what I know: I’m not equating this to anything political. This is a Guardians/Indians/Cleveland thing. It’s been debated. It never went away,” Rizzo said, via ESPN Cleveland.

Truth be told, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to continue to debate this.
The team has changed its name and its branding, so it’s time to move on.
Of course, a nickname is a huge part of a team’s identity, but if someone stops rooting for a team because it changed its name, perhaps they were never a big fan to begin with.
All that matters is how the team fares on the field, and everything else is just outside noise.
Not many people will care about whether the team is called the Guardians if it wins the World Series.
That’s where the focus should be.
The Guardians are trying to get back to the playoffs after an inconsistent start to the season, and the focus should be on the trade deadline and the rest of the season.
