The Cleveland Guardians went through one of the most emotional moments in recent baseball history.
Nic Enright’s journey to the mound was about much more than just perseverance.
It was a story of resiliency and determination.
Enright was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2022 after experiencing some tightness in his neck.
It didn’t take long before he started experiencing other symptoms, such as eczema, night sweats, and itchiness.
Now, he’s pitching in the Majors.
When asked about his journey, the 28-year-old hurler admitted that while it wasn’t always easy, it was all about not letting that negative condition break his stride:
“The biggest thing was not letting (cancer) control me and not letting it dictate how I was going to live my life,” Enright said. “That’s the biggest thing for anyone else who’s going through something similar to this. To not let it consume you and not let it become everything that you are.”
Enright threw two scoreless frames and struck out three in the Guardians’ 5-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
He was called up from the minors on Saturday after Hunter Gaddis was placed on the bereavement list.
He’s undergone multiple treatments before and after each season, and he will reportedly undergo more rounds of immunotherapy at the end of this campaign.
The Guardians took him in the 20th round of the 2019 amateur draft, but the Miami Marlins later swooped in and took him thanks to the Rule 5 draft back in 2022.
He returned to Ohio a couple of years ago, and while he missed a big stretch of last season with a shoulder injury, he still managed to go 2-1 with a 1.06 ERA in 16 games at Columbus.
As of now, he holds a 17-11 record and 3.13 ERA in 156 appearances in the minors, including two starts.
