This week, the Cleveland Guardians made a tough decision.
After years of struggles at the MLB level, they sent shortstop Brayan Rocchio down to Triple-A Columbus to work on his swing and his overall offensive game.
They are moving forward with other alternatives at shortstop for the time being.
Once upon a time, not that long ago, Rocchio looked like the Guardians’ shortstop of the future.
His horrible offensive performance in 2024 (79 wRC+) and 2025 (27 wRC+) casts a cloud over his future role with the team, though.
Rocchio is a hard worker and a fantastic defender at short, but these days, whether a player earns a spot on a roster depends largely on his offensive performance.
Fortunately, he hasn’t taken his demotion lightly.
Quite the contrary, he is trying to prove that he is too good for Triple-A.
“Cleveland #Guardians switch-hitting (SS) Brayan Rocchio reached base 3x tonight (2-6 3R 2B 2RBI BB) for Columbus driving in a pair of runs in the team’s win over Omaha. Rocchio is hitting .417 with a 1.146 OPS in his first three Triple-A games. 5-12 4R 2(2B) 3RBI 4BB 2SB. AVG .417, OBP .563, SLG .583, OPS 1.146

In three games since being demoted to Columbus, Rocchio has two doubles and two stolen bases.
Sure, some home run power would be nice, but that’s not really his game.
In fact, he is showing plate discipline in the extremely small sample available since he went down, plus some speed and pop.
Those were his three main shortcomings as a hitter in the majors.
It goes to show that the leap in skill and talent level from Triple-A to MLB is more evident than ever before.
If Rocchio can get in a nice little run, he could win another chance with the Guardians.
What he does with that hypothetical chance will determine his future with the organization.
