The Cleveland Guardians’ pitching dug them into a hole early on Saturday, but they were still able to come out on top.
Gavin Williams struggled right out of the gate, allowing a leadoff homer in his very first pitch for the second straight time this season.
It was also the fourth leadoff homer the Guardians have allowed this season.
Fortunately, Daniel Schneemann was able to put the team on his shoulders with a timely swing that cleared the bases in the top of the ninth inning to secure a 5-3 comeback win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
It was such a big moment that he was not even aware of what was going on:
“I kind of blacked out in that moment,” Schneemann said. “I usually don’t know when I get ‘em, but that one just felt really good off the bat and I’m glad it worked out.”
Schneemann’s two-out grand slam off Yimi Garcia gave this team a much-needed boost.
It was also perhaps the greatest performance of his career, as it marked his first-ever multi-home run game.
That also took his tally to four home runs for the season, and he has nine RBI and a .833 slugging percentage in his last 18 at-bats, according to Joe Noga of Cleveland.com.
He made the most of Garcia’s steep pitch count in the final inning and waited for his opportunity to send a fastball 395 feet into right field.
He had already homered off Chad Green in the eighth with a solo homer to cut the deficit to 3-1.
This was the first grand slam in his career, and he also had a career-best five RBI in a single game.
He’s certainly making the most of the extended opportunities.
