The weekend was rough for the Cleveland Guardians when it came to pitching workload.
The Guardians played three games and didn’t get much length from their starters.
They covered 12.1 innings, a little more than four per outing.
That means the rest was covered by the bullpen.
So, that unit is very tired right now, generally speaking, due to being overworked.
That’s why Cleveland has made so many pitching moves in recent days, including a surprising one.
“The Guardians optioned Joey Cantillo to Triple-A Columbus and recalled Cody Bolton from Columbus,” team insider Tim Stebbins wrote on X.

Even after allowing three runs (two earned) in two innings in his latest start, Cantillo’s ERA is a very solid 2.35.
The move, however, is probably not performance-related.
Cantillo has been an asset for the Guardians in his new role.
However, they need fresh arms because there isn’t an off day on the horizon.
Cantillo will probably be unavailable for Cleveland for at least two or three days.
He’ll likely be back in a hurry because he has been a rock-solid reliever from the left side.
Taking his place is Cody Bolton, who will provide some depth (and length) for manager Stephen Vogt.
Bolton, who recently joined the organization, has a 4.50 ERA in four innings with the Columbus Clippers, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Cleveland is making sure everyone is fresh and well-rested.
