MLB Pipeline has put together one of the most entertaining pieces of the offseason.
They showed their predictive skills and the knowledge they have about each farm system to come up with the prospect they think will be the best for each organization two years from now, in 2027.
There is no way to include future draft picks or international signings, so it only considers players currently in each minor league system.
The exercise invited specialists to think about those prospects in the low minors but with a very high ceiling.
For the Cleveland Guardians, that description fits outfielder Jaison Chourio.
“While older brother Jackson may have more power and speed, Jaison might provide better bat-to-ball ability and defensive value. Signed for $1.2 million out of Venezuela in 2022, he won the Carolina League’s MVP and top prospect awards last year after topping the Single-A circuit in walks (86 in 98 games) and ranking second in on-base percentage (.414) and third in OPS (.812) at age 19,” MLB Pipeline wrote.
If Jaison Chourio hadn’t broken his wrist while trying to make a defensive play, there is a good chance he would have made it to High-A.
He has rare on-base skills and plate discipline for a 19-year-old.
Two or three years away from the majors, it’s easy to project him as the best Guardians prospect going forward.
He has an excellent glove, knows how to get on base (19.9 percent walk rate last year in Single-A), and has blazing speed as his 44 stolen bases attest.
He hit just five homers last year but has the frame to develop more power as he matures.
If that happens, look out.
Jason Chourio could be as good as his brother, who is a star for the Milwaukee Brewers, even if he doesn’t show as much power.
