The Cleveland Guardians made a rather surprising decision earlier in the off-season.
Moving on from an elite defensive player like Andres Gimenez was a big blow, even if his offense had left plenty to be desired.
We’re talking about a Platinum Glove winner who made a living out of making highlight-worthy catches and plays.
With that in mind, Zack Meisel of The Athletic shared his thoughts on the team’s current situation at the second baseman spot.
While he believes that Juan Brito will get the bulk of the work there, he also thinks that Angel Martinez, Tyler Freeman, Gabriel Arias, and even Daniel Schneemann will also get some time:
“The guess here, a couple of weeks before spring training, is that Brito will wind up starting the most games at second base this season. But that doesn’t mean he’ll be the choice on Opening Day. And, of course, this group is merely keeping the seat warm for Travis Bazzana, last year’s No. 1 overall pick,” Meisel said.
There’s no easy way to replace an elite defensive player like Gimenez.
Then again, the Guardians had a surplus of potential options at the position and needed to add more reliable arms to their starting rotation.
Gimenez signed a very lucrative contract extension two years ago, and he had regressed at the plate in both of those seasons, so money was also a factor to consider here.
Travis Bazzana represents the future of the organization, and this move may also suggest that the Guardians believe he is prepared to take on a significant role in 2025.
It’s difficult to predict how things will unfold, and we’ll have a clearer picture once Spring Training begins.
