The notion that you can’t buy championships in MLB went out the window last season when the Cleveland Guardians found themselves in the LCS alongside the three highest-spending teams in baseball: the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
All three teams are loaded with players on nine-figure megadeals up and down their rosters.
Fans are pushing for the team to spend this offseason after seeing how close they were to reaching the World Series this past season, but history says they shouldn’t get their hopes up.
BrooksGate shared on X a graphic detailing how much money each team has spent in free agency since 2020.
The Los Angeles Dodgers spent $1.59 billion, while the Guardians spent $77.7 million, placing them second-to-last.

The Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies are also over $1 billion, while the New York Mets and Texas Rangers are just under a billion to round out the top five.
The only team that has spent less than the Cleveland Guardians is the Baltimore Orioles at $57.9 million, and they appear to be ready to spend now that they are under new ownership and the team is ready to contend for championships.
Cleveland has a glaring need for starting pitching this offseason and another big bat, but until the team proves it is serious about spending, fans should not get their hopes up.
Larry Dolan is the fourth-richest owner in baseball, so it’s inexcusable that the Guardians are at the bottom of this list.
