The Cleveland Guardians still have the best record in the American League despite being on a 3-game losing streak, but the starting pitching has been a black eye of late.
Carlos Carrasco, Logan Allen, and Triston McKenzie all now have an ERA over 5.00 and are starting to become a concern, but one of the team’s best pitching prospects has been impressive of late to give the team more hope for the future.
The team’s 19-year-old right-handed prospect Santiago Peraza had a tremendous start yesterday in the Dominican Summer League with five scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and striking out seven.

Peraza now owns a 0.47 ERA over…
— Guardians Prospective (@CleGuardPro) June 29, 2024
Peraza has now given up just one earned run over 19 innings through his first four starts this season, which is good for a 0.47 ERA.
Peraza hasn’t caught on nationally just yet and is still ranked outside the team’s top 30 prospects according to MLB.com, but this is an encouraging development after he posted a 6.00 ERA in 13 games last season.
The righty just turned 19 and is listed at just 135 pounds at 5’11”, so he clearly needs more time to fill out and hone his craft before thinking about making it to Cleveland.
As for immediate reinforcements, Gavin Williams threw 82 pitches in his sixth rehab start on Thursday and saw his fastball get up to 98.7 mph, so his return to the rotation isn’t far off.
It’s incredible this team is doing this well with three of its five starting pitchers having an ERA over 5.00.
If only Peraza was ready to step in.
