The Cleveland Guardians need some offensive help, having finished in the bottom half in many hitting stats and metrics this year. Knowing the way they operate, don’t expect them to sign the best and most expensive position player available, though.
This is an organization used to look for bargains. They want the best value for their buck, and that’s no secret to anyone.
With that in mind, analyst Justin Lada discussed the possibility of Cleveland signing free agent outfielder Randal Grichuk, who spent the majority of the 2026 campaign with the Chicago White Sox. The 35-year-old veteran is an asset against lefties, but had an excellent year overall with a .287/.314/.566 line with a 139 wRC+ and 15 home runs in 280 plate appearances between the New York Yankees and the Pale Hose.
“[Randal Grichuk] didn’t have a great arm this year, but previously, he’s had much better success as a guy with outfield assists and ability to throw out runners. He had a bad year in 2025, but he was hurt. The underlying data said he should have been pretty good, and he bounced back. The thing that scares me is he looks like he’s an every-other-year guy. Like 2024, .876 OPS. 2026, .880 OPS. Is he gonna be a pumpkin in 2027? I don’t know. But I would have taken him when the Yankees let him go earlier this year, and they didn’t. I’d be interested. I would be interested,” Lada said.
Grichuk signed late with the Yankees, missing most of the spring and thus taking a while to get going. When the Bombers got rid of him when they needed a roster spot, he joined the White Sox and was an asset for them.
Grichuk excelled against left-handed hitters, racking up an 181 wRC+ with 11 of his 15 home runs while facing them. That’s certainly an area in which he could potentially help the Guardians, especially if they decide to non-tender fellow outfielder and lefty-masher Jo Adell.
Most of Grichuk’s current value is tied to his ability to hit left-handed pitching, but he is a decent defensive left fielder, too, and is good for a few outfield assists per year, as Lada indicates. If Cleveland fails to bring in a bigger name for the outfield, the veteran is definitely not a bad fallback option, all things considered.
