When the Cleveland Guardians traded for catcher Patrick Bailey in early May, it was seen as something of a curious move. The Guardians already had a light-hitting defensive specialist in Austin Hedges, and they would be demoting Bo Naylor, who was seen as having offensive upside despite a very slow start to the season.
Now, six games into a playoff run, Bailey has emerged as one of the best hitters in baseball. His solo home run in the seventh inning tied Game 1 of the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays, propelling the Guardians to a 7-3 win.
It was just the latest example of how Bailey has become a different hitter in Cleveland, with major improvements in every significant statistic.
“Patrick Bailey in 383 games as a Giant: .224 AVG, 22 HR, .329 SLG, .611 OPS, 72 OPS+. Patrick Bailey in 88 games as a Guardian: .240 AVG, 11 HR, .415 SLG, .716 OPS, 99 OPS+. Major improvement on offense from Bailey since joining Cleveland,” Just Baseball posted.

In 82 regular-season games for Cleveland, Bailey had a .390 slugging percentage and a .683 slugging percentage that would have been well above his previous career highs for a full campaign. He also hit nine home runs after never hitting that many in three-plus years with the San Francisco Giants.
Bailey has taken off even more during the playoffs. In his first six career postseason games, he has a slash line of .368/.400/.684 with two home runs among his seven hits. His 1.084 OPS is 10th among all playoff participants and third among players still active, behind only Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras and teammate Jose Ramirez, and ahead of teammate Chase DeLauter.
Replacing Hedges as a pinch-hitter in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Chicago White Sox, Bailey hit a solo homer that gave the Guardians their first run of the must win. Ramirez followed with a two-run homer that gave Cleveland the lead in a game they would later come back to win 9-5.
Entering Game 2 on Tuesday, Bailey has six hits in his past 14 at-bats, and if he can keep it up, he could become a legitimate contender for ALCS MVP, which would have been very hard to believe when he arrived five months ago.
