Brayan Rocchio has been the most clutch player for the Cleveland Guardians this season. That is especially impressive, as the shortstop usually bats ninth in the lineup.
He started to build that reputation during the 2024 playoffs, when he batted .333 and had a .906 OPS as the Guardians advanced to the ALCS. He enhanced it last season with a strong second half that helped Cleveland rally from a huge standings deficit to win the AL Central.
This year, it has grown even further. During Cleveland’s latest climb, he had a historic game with a grand slam and a walk-off homer, and in a critical showdown against the Chicago White Sox, his walk-off double kept Cleveland from falling 2.5 games behind in the divisional race.
With a third straight postseason appearance now secured, Rocchio is giving the Guardians a new name for their October push, shifting the attention from himself to the team as a whole.
“It’s not Rocctober, it’s Cle-tember and Cle-tober. It’s about the team, not about me. It’s about the team. We have incredible guys. They play hard every time. I love this team. That’s not me. That’s Cle-tober,” Rocchio said.

Even after his postseason heroics in 2024, Rocchio was sent back to the minors early in the 2025 season. He was recalled in July and went on to post a .257/.313/.376 slash line with four home runs and 32 RBIs after the All-Star break, when the Guardians overcame a 15.5-game deficit to win the division for a second straight year.
He opened this season as Cleveland’s starting second baseman, but he was moved to shortstop after Gabriel Arias was injured. He has doubled his career total with 13 home runs, and he has 70 RBIs and 62 runs scored despite more than 60 percent of his at-bats coming from the No. 9 spot.
Rocchio has four walk-off hits this season, and the Guardians have needed every one of them. They lead the White Sox by one game heading into the final weekend, and would lose the division if they fall into a tie with Chicago.
The 25-year-old has seven walk-off hits in his four-season career, and if he can get one more that wins the division, they may have to change the nickname back again.
