Life isn’t exclusively black or white. It’s actually full of grays, and once we understand that, things become much clearer and enjoyable.
The same is true of baseball. People still debate the best path to consistent winning: a stats-based, sabermetric approach or decades of old-school concepts. The truth might lie somewhere in between, in the grays.
When discussing the reasons why the Cleveland Guardians decided to execute more trades and bring in more people from outside the organization before the 2026 trade deadline, team insider Paul Hoynes said that the organization had one idea in mind, which was trusting the process and the young talent in place, but pounced on a few market opportunities to ‘pivot’ from that strategy to some extent.
He found some gems in the grays.
“Why did the front office act this season, while turning its back on other seasons? It may have had something to do with (president of baseball operations Chris) Antonetti saying in spring training that he could always ‘pivot’ from the organization’s plan to go with their young players this season by acquiring players from outside the organization. In the end, it has been a combination of Antonetti’s pivot and the strong play of young players [that] have brought the Guardians to the doorstep of the postseason once again,” Hoynes wrote.
For years, Antonetti built a team with young, controllable players via the draft, international free agency, and savvy trades. This season, he saw that the group he had put together was on the verge of breaking out as a squad, and that it just needed some help from outside in key areas.
For example, the Guardians needed a right-handed power bat before August 3, and they went out and acquired Jo Adell. They needed a reliable starter, and they brought in Foster Griffin. They found themselves needing a reliever, so they traded for Craig Yoho. They saw Kyle Manzardo’s struggles in 2026, and they welcomed Nathaniel Lowe. No player in that group required a significant investment in prospect capital, which is exactly why Antonetti brought them.
Basically, the executive showed faith in his current group of young stars, such as Chase DeLauter, Travis Bazzana, Angel Martinez, Parker Messick, Gavin Williams, and Cade Smith, just to name a few, and decided to move and complement them.
The results, so far, have been satisfactory.
