Gavin Williams saved his best for last, and the Guardians made sure Cleveland’s final regular season home game ended exactly the way fans wanted it to.
Williams was brilliant across seven shutout innings Sunday, allowing just three hits while striking out nine as the Guardians blanked the Athletics, 1-0, at Progressive Field to complete a three-game sweep. It marked Cleveland’s third straight win over Oakland to close out its home schedule unbeaten for the weekend. Williams set the tone from the very first inning, striking out Henry Bolte, Shea Langeliers and Lawrence Butler in succession to open the game, all swinging.
Cleveland’s own account needed nothing more than brooms to capture the mood afterward.

The offense did not give Williams much to work with, but it did not need to.
Jo Adell extended his hitting streak to eight games and pushed his RBI total to 31 since joining Cleveland at the trade deadline. Steven Kwan continued his personal dominance over Oakland as well, collecting three hits and pushing his career average against the Athletics to .376.
Cade Smith closed things out in relief of Hunter Gaddis, needing just three pitches to strand two inherited runners in the eighth before returning for the ninth and picking up his thirty ninth save of the season, second most in the American League.
The win guaranteed Cleveland would remain in first place in the AL Central regardless of what happened later Sunday between the White Sox and Tigers in Chicago. The Guardians improved to 81-75 and temporarily pushed their division lead to a game and a half over Chicago, with six games left to play.
Cleveland is off Monday before opening its final road trip of the regular season in Boston, with Parker Messick set to take the mound against the Red Sox.
