Cleveland Guardians’ former No. 1 draft pick Travis Bazzana has had a roller-coaster of a season so far. He was brilliant in May, earned an All-Star berth in July, and was awful in the summer, with a stunning lack of production and inconsistent defense.
He wasn’t the second coming of Roberto Alomar at his highest, and wasn’t a below-replacement-level player at his lowest, either. It’s all part of the natural learning curve for a rookie.
After posting a 63 wRC+ in August, which is 37 percent worse than the league-average hitter over that timeframe, his bat has come alive in recent games. His offensive resurgence, as expected, has been a key factor in the Guardians’ recent push for the division.
Bazzana hit not one, but two solo homers in Tuesday’s 7-6 walk-off win against the Chicago White Sox, and his season line is up to a solid .252/.344/.412 with 14 long balls, 19 stolen bases, and a well above-average 115 wRC+.

The guy is red-hot, getting on base in more than half of his plate appearances in his last ten games. In September, he is slashing an incredible .385/.489/.846 with a 1.336 OPS, a 265 wRC+, three doubles, five homers, and 14 RBI in 13 games.
This is the Travis Bazzana that the Guardians picked ahead of Charlie Condon, Jac Caglianone, Chase Burns, Nick Kurtz, and J.J. Wetherholt, among others. This is the guy they expected him to be: someone with defensive questions, sure, but capable of doing everything at the plate, from hitting a ball into the gaps to clearing the wall often.
Right now, he is being deployed as a middle-of-the-order hitter, and the role suits him. He is leaving his mark in games and increasing the Guardians’ win probability every time he gets a plate appearance. As long as he keeps playing like this, Cleveland will have a chance to beat anybody.
