Former Top Prospect Is Blossoming Into A Shutdown Reliever

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Daniel Espino was one of the most promising prospects in baseball in the early part of the 2020s. Drafted in 2019 as a starting pitcher, his career was interrupted for several years due to a string of injuries and surgeries, mainly to his pitching shoulder.

He finally became 100 percent healthy late last year and began the 2026 campaign with a new role in relief. Espino, still extraordinarily talented, has alternated his season between Triple-A and the majors, putting up a 3.68 ERA in 36.2 innings in Columbus.

He has mainly been an up-and-down arm for the Guardians, but it’s hard to deny that every time he has gotten the chance at the highest level, he has been lights out. He got a new one on Saturday as an opener in the loss against the Minnesota Twins, and was amazing once again.

Espino opened the game with two brilliant, scoreless innings. He surrendered just one hit and no walks, striking out two batters. He averaged 98.5 mph with his high-octane fastball and earned four swings and misses with it, making hitters look very uncomfortable.

Espino is making it clear that he can be a shutdown reliever and that he shouldn’t leave this roster anytime soon. If you take a look at his numbers at the MLB level, that reality becomes evident.

After the two innings he racked up on Saturday, he has 12 this year, and his ERA is an elite 2.25. His Fielding Independent Pitching, or FIP, is an even better 1.85, and he has just four walks against 20 strikeouts.

Granted, the bigger sample size of his Triple-A stint indicates that he can struggle with walks sometimes, and that can’t be completely ignored. He has issued 5.4 walks per nine innings at Columbus, and it’s something he needs to work on. His brief tenure in the majors, however, invites the team to give him a stable roster spot and role.

Espino has been excellent in late-inning relief appearances and has now proven he can also thrive as an opener. He is becoming everything the organization wanted him to be, only in a slightly different role.
