Parker Messick Has Career Night In Loss To Tigers

The Cleveland Guardians can’t seem to build any consistent momentum of late and tripped up in a 6-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. The loss dropped them into a tie with the suddenly hot Toronto Blue Jays for the third Wild Card spot in the American League as the screws are now tightening as we get deeper into September.

As disappointing as the loss was, there was a nice silver lining. Rookie of the Year contender Parker Messick didn’t have his best outing, giving up three earned runs over six innings, but he did rack up a career high in strikeouts.

Messick’s 12 strikeouts against Detroit were a career high. He now has a 2.05 ERA over his last 11 starts and is only getting stronger as the season goes on.

Kevin McGonigle of the Tigers still has the inside track to the ROY award, but Messick is really tightening the screws of late. He had a few hiccups earlier in the summer, but the burgeoning ace has been dominant of late and he and Gavin Williams are shaping up to be quite the young duo for this playoff contender.

Messick’s growth is a testament obviously to him and his work ethic, but also this organization. He was projected to be a potential No. 2 or No. 3 starter if he reached his ceiling, but few ever saw this coming. Making an All-Star team as a rookie and being a strikeout machine with an ERA in the mid-2s was not what most fans expected from a fringe top-ten prospect.

The Guardians have the type of rotation capable of making a deep playoff run, but obviously they have to get there first. The offense can’t waste performances like this, and hopefully they’ll be able to provide some more support for Williams on Sunday.
