The Cleveland Guardians have needed an offensive boost all season, particularly at first base, but it became even more glaring as they started to fall behind in the AL playoff race. At the same time that was happening, prospect Ralphy Velazquez was having a historic month at the plate in Triple-A.
Even after acquiring first baseman Nathaniel Lowe at the trade deadline in early August, the Guardians had a golden opportunity to promote Velazquez when MLB rosters expanded by two players on Sept. 1. Cleveland again passed on adding him, choosing utilityman Daniel Schneemann and relief pitcher Carlos Hernandez instead.
With 20 games remaining in the regular season, there is still time for the Guardians to change their mind. But according to general manager Mike Chernoff, the organization has no intention of doing so.
Chernoff recently got candid about a potential Velazquez call-up, saying that while he has earned one with his performance, the Guardians have no role for him on their major league team.
“There’s two things that factor into a call-up. One is how you’re doing and how ready you are. The other one is the opportunity on the team. Ralphy has done everything in his power on the first one of what he can control. He just had an absolutely tremendous month. It was incredible to see the adjustments that he’s made. The other side of it is the opportunity here. It doesn’t make sense to bring a young player up and have him be a pinch-hitter or something like that. We didn’t have the spot for him right now, but we feel like with the group that we have up here, this is the right group to hopefully take us into the postseason,” Chernoff said.

At face value, that may be a dubious claim, especially with underperforming veteran Rhys Hoskins sidelined since Aug. 18 and still days away from a possible return. That has left Lowe as the primary first baseman, and in 24 games since his arrival, he has a .218/.258/.368 slash line with just 19 hits and three home runs.
Meanwhile, with Columbus, Velazquez hit 15 home runs in August, with 32 hits and a slash line of .356/.433/.867 in 23 games. It would seem to be a perfect combination of need and solution, but the Guardians continue to resist making the move.
It has been speculated that the organization does not want to put Velazquez on the 40-man roster because if it does so, and ongoing labor talks result in a lockout, the 21-year-old would be unable to play in the minors to continue his development. Asked if a potential work stoppage next season factored into the decision, Chernoff said, “No, no, not at all.”
Fans can only hope that is the truth, because if the Guardians fall just short of a playoff berth this season, there will be a lot of talk about how it might have turned out differently with Velazquez on the team.
