The Cleveland Guardians take warranted pride in their prospect development. It has paid off in a big way this season, with 10 players making their MLB debuts, led by outfielder Chase DeLauter and second baseman Travis Bazzana, who are among the best rookies in the American League.
That’s not even mentioning starting pitcher Parker Messick, who maintained his rookie status following a late-season callup last year. The left-hander has emerged as an All-Star and a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate.
Even with so much significant talent moving up to the major league level, the Guardians still received a notable ranking among farm systems from MLB.com, coming in at No. 12 overall.
“The Guardians may have slipped out of the top 10 for the first time since pre-2024, but its system is doing its job. Of its top six prospects coming into the year, Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter and Parker Messick have graduated to key roles in Cleveland; [Angel] Genao just took over a starting job; catcher/outfielder Cooper Ingle has gotten a cup of coffee and [Ralphy] Velazquez could get there soon,” Sam Dykstra, Jim Callis, and Jonathan Mayo wrote.
The Guardians entered this season at No. 6 in these rankings, but the drop should be considered a good thing, based on the talent that has arrived in the major leagues. Not everyone has worked out, with Juan Brito no longer with the organization and Ingle struggling during his brief call-up, but the overall results are very encouraging.
DeLauter has arguably been Cleveland’s best hitter all season, and, most importantly, he has been able to play in 107 games after battling injuries in the minors. He did leave Cleveland’s most recent loss to the San Diego Padres with hamstring tightness, and his status remains unclear.
Bazzana was called up in late April and became an AL All-Star Game selection. Outfielder Khalil Watson, Cleveland’s No. 16 prospect, showed flashes of power and defense in his 27-game stint.
Genao, its No. 1 prospect who was called up in early August, had four hits in his debut and currently sports a .294 batting average playing second base and third base. No. 2 prospect Velazquez has 14 homers at Triple-A, and the first baseman could get a late-season call-up as a boost for the offense.
With four prospects ranked in MLB’s overall top 100 – Genao (No. 29), Velazquez (No. 32), pitcher Braylon Doughty (No. 72), and outfielder Juneiker Caceres (No. 82) – there will be more help on the way for the Guardians in the coming years.
