In a surprising move, the Cleveland Guardians front office actually made a legitimate attempt to buy during Monday’s trade deadline. They actually made a few moves, which is surprising, but should give this team a real shot at landing a postseason spot. The biggest problem for this team was the offense, mainly the lack of power in the lineup.
The Guardians did address that with multiple moves, but analyst Bruce Drennan loves one move more than the others.
“We were 29th in runs scored, 27th in home runs, 28th in batting average. In fairness, Antonetti and Chernoff addressed the hitting. I’m very pleased with what they did. Whether it will turn out or not, we don’t know. Time will tell, but they addressed the needs as far as bats. At the moment, the Guardians sit only a few games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox. Normally, the Guardians do nothing or make a minor move and hope for the best post-deadline. Instead, this season they added both Nathaniel Lowe and outfielder Jo Adell to help bolster the lineup.
The Guardians traded right-handed prospect Alejandro Rivera and infielder Juan Brito to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Lowe. The 31-year-old slugger is a good pickup and should help improve the production at first base. Rhys Hoskins has 12 homers, but an ugly slash line, and can’t be trusted to play every day right now. The assumption is that Lowe will platoon with Hoskins for the rest of the season.
So far this season, Lowe is slashing .269/.343/.488 with 13 homers and 42 RBI across 86 games. He’s a player who hits for average and has 20-homer upside as well. The Guardians desperately need players who can get on base at a high rate while still producing power numbers. Lowe does both those things, so this appears to be a good pickup.
It’s a low-risk move that could end up being huge for the Guardians. Lowe already blasted one home run during his first three games with the club.
He won’t solve all their problems, but it’s nice to see the Guardians front office actually trying to bring in help for a competitive club.
