The Cleveland Guardians have fallen flat on their faces coming out of the All-Star break, and particularly of late despite an impressive trade deadline that saw the team bring in Jo Adell, Foster Griffin, and Nathaniel Lowe. All three moves looked to be able to light a fire under this group, but the team hit a new low on Thursday afternoon after getting blown out 13-6 by the New York Mets to complete the sweep and officially knock the Guardians out of a Wild Card spot in the American League.
The Guardians are now two games under .500 and things are undoubtedly getting worse. The Mets waved the white flag at the deadline and moved a lot of key pieces since they are one of the worst teams in baseball, so getting swept and giving up a whopping 25 runs over three games in the process is a tough pill to swallow.
Former Guardian and current analyst Jensen Lewis provided some painful context following Thursday’s blowout that certainly won’t make the fans feel any better.

Lindor being the one to hit the dagger three-run homer of all people is just throwing salt in the wound. It’s discouraging that the Guardians also threw a few runs on the board on Thursday, which has been a huge issue of late, but it was the pitching that was unable to hold their own.
These are series you can’t afford to lose at this point of the season when competing for a playoff spot. The Mets limped into Cleveland and gave this team what will hopefully be a huge wake-up call.
The Guardians have to lick their wounds and get ready for the most important series of the season beginning on Friday. The Guardians will head west to take on the first place Chicago White Sox, who are four up on the Guardians in the loss column ahead of their Thursday night battle with the scalding hot Boston Red Sox, who are looking to complete a sweep of their own.
This was a rough series no matter how you look at it. The more stats you look at, the worse it gets, so the best thing for all parties is to learn from this and move on to Chicago ready to make up some ground in the division.
