Insider Reveals Angel Genao’s Potential Role With Guardians

After a brilliant campaign in the minor leagues with the Cleveland Guardians’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates, infielder Angel Genao received one of the best pieces of news of his life late on Tuesday. He is going to be called up to the major leagues to fulfill a lifelong dream.

Genao, the second-best prospect in the Guardians and a top-50 guy in all of MLB, can play three infield positions and has a plus hit tool that forecasts a bright future. He was added to the 40-man roster in the offseason to avoid the risk of losing him in the Rule 5 Draft, but he was more than just a speculative add: the organization knew he could make an impact in the majors in 2026, and he is about to get that chance.

Where will he play, though? As of now, the three positions he can defend, which are second base, third base, and shortstop, are covered by Travis Bazzana, Jose Ramirez, and Brayan Rocchio, respectively, with Gabriel Arias serving as the utility infielder.

Guardians insider Tim Stebbins discussed Genao’s prospects for playing time.

“Genao is primarily a shortstop (318 career starts in the Minors), he also has experience playing third base (58) and second (43) in the Minors. All things equal, Genao’s clearest path to playing time in Cleveland could come at third. Brayan Rocchio is manning shortstop and Travis Bazzana is at second base,” Stebbins wrote.

Stebbins seems to be assuming that Ramirez will either go to the injured list with a re-aggravation of his left wrist injury or that he will get more starts in the designated hitter role. As a reminder, J-Ram missed Tuesday’s game with inflammation on his surgically repaired hand.

Genao has played 96 games between Akron and Columbus, and he’s logged a .300/.401/.474 line with 20 doubles, 13 homers, 53 RBI, 60 walks, and 68 strikeouts. He has been particularly effective in Triple-A, where he boasts a .309/.395/.494 line with 17 two-baggers, 10 round-trippers, and a 133 wRC+ over 72 games. He went yard twice on Tuesday.

If Ramirez is indeed going to the injured list, be ready to witness Genao as the primary starter there, with Arias remaining in a utility role. If the superstar is healthy enough to play, however, it’s Arias’ future the one that could be in danger.
