MLB fans value World Series wins more than anything else.
However, that’s not the be-all, end-all when evaluating a franchise.
In fact, since life is about moments, we can say that there is more to it than just counting rings and trophies.
True fans treasure the unforgettable moments their team gifts them, such as individual accomplishments, the ascent of a homegrown star, records, no-hitters, and perfect games.
The Cleveland Guardians do have a couple of World Series victories, but for 1980s fans, Len Barker’s perfect game was just as meaningful as a Game 7 win.
It happened on this day, on May 15, but 43 years ago in 1981.

Barker tossed MLB’s tenth perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
It also came in front of his fans, at Cleveland Stadium.
It was a historic day, as no hitter even reached ball three.
Barker struck out 11 batters, all of them swinging, in the masterful display of control and dominance.
To this day, Barker’s is the most recent no-hitter thrown by a Guardians player.
Perhaps he wasn’t a star, but Barker did complete a very solid career with a 4.34 ERA from 1976 to 1987.
He pitched for the Texas Rangers, the Atlanta Braves, and the Milwaukee Brewers in addition to the Guardians.
He earned one All-Star berth (1981) and led the American League in strikeouts twice (1980, 1981).
Those who watched baseball in the seventies and eighties might remember him, but he will be forever remembered for that May 15, 1981 game in which he stymied the Blue Jays and wrote his name in the history books.
