Excitement was building at Progressive Field as Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams took a perfect game into the top of the sixth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The way the right-hander has been pitching recently, it certainly wasn’t out of the question.
Then, on the second pitch of the inning, Arizona’s No. 7 hitter, Tim Tawa, tried to bunt for a base hit. The Guardians did not like it very much, as at that point in a perfect game, it can be seen as violating the unwritten rules of baseball.
Tawa laced a hard single to right field on the next pitch, but that was far from the end of the episode. More remarks were exchanged, and both benches emptied. Meanwhile, the grounds crew was trying to get the tarp on the field while the teams were arguing.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt spoke out about the altercation, saying it was more about what went on afterward rather than the bunt attempt itself.
“When things happen on the baseball field, tempers can flare sometimes. I was upset just because there were people talking to our players that shouldn’t be. So that was what my grief was about,” Vogt said. “Obviously, when things like that happen, some people are going to have opinions one way or the other. But obviously, when there’s a perfect game going, some people are going to be very upset at that. But again, that wasn’t the crux of my frustration.”
Cleveland catcher Patrick Bailey and shortstop Brayan Rocchio each had words for Tawa during the inning. The verbal jousting escalated between the teams after Williams walked Corbin Carroll on a very wild pitch with a wet ball and the umpires decided the field needed to be covered.
Interestingly, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo and Vogt were together when the Guardians manager was a player for him in the 2021 season. The two men, who are said to be close friends, talked it out and calmed things down.
After a long rain delay, the Guardians were able to complete a 5-0 victory that salvaged the final game of the three-game set. Williams wound up allowing one hit with 10 strikeouts, which put him in historic company with Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw as the only pitchers to strike out at least 10 and walk one or fewer in at least five straight games.
It was not quite a perfect game, but based on the odd chain of events, it will go down as one of the most memorable contests in the Guardians’ 2026 season.
