Williams joining that group in the same season reflects just how dominant his stuff has looked over the last month, combining his strikeout ability with sharp control, a rare pairing that has defined each of the six pitchers on that list.
Williams has been especially effective at home this season, posting a strong earned run average across 72 and 2/3 innings at Progressive Field, and his recent stretch has only built on that foundation. Sunday’s win also snapped Cleveland’s difficult run through the second half, giving the Guardians a much-needed boost heading into the final stretch of the season.
For a Cleveland pitching staff that has quietly become one of the better units in baseball this season, Williams has emerged as its most dominant arm over the past month.
