The Cleveland Guardians have officially fallen back to .500 after dropping another game to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. They have also slipped mathematically into third place in the AL Central and are now three games behind the Chicago White Sox as they continue to limp toward the trade deadline.
While the fans would love to see the Guardians be aggressive given how wide open the American League is this season and with the Detroit Tigers doing their best to speed-run a lockout by handing their two-time Cy Young winner to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a nearly 28-year-old prospect from Double-A, it would be surprising to see the front office go make a big splash at the deadline. This team is exclusively prioritizing prospect development to get over the hump, and one team executive is particularly excited about two of their best young future stars and how they have performed of late.
Mason Horodyski of WEWS recently shared a clip of POBO Chris Antonetti’s press conference where he discussed a number of topics leading up to the deadline, but gave a particular shoutout to Angel Genao and Ralphy Velazquez. He is a strong believer in the two of them and is excited about the progress they have made this season.
“Both guys continue to make great developmental progress in Triple-A. They’re both really young for the level and are going through and experiencing things there that they haven’t before. There are a lot of guys in Triple-A that have major league experience that have good pitches and also know hot to attack hitters and I think this is helping Ralphy and Angel grow as hitters. We’ve been really excited about the progress they’ve made,” said Antonetti.

Genao turned 22 two months ago and has an .848 OPS in Triple-A while Velazquez just turned 21 and has an .846 OPS of his own. Both have proven that they are just about ready to go to Cleveland, but there is no point in rushing two top prospects who are that young.
The Guardians don’t have a need for a shortstop right now, but there is a gaping hole at first base right now with how poorly Rhys Hoskins and Kyle Manzardo have performed in 2026. You don’t want to rush Velazquez or put more pressure on him because of how glaring the need in Cleveland is, but it’s getting harder by the day to justify keeping him down there.
Realistically, the Guardians will probably ride out the year with Hoskins and Manzardo at first and potentially give Velazquez a shot next year. The ideal move would be for Antonetti to go make a splash ahead of the deadline, but it’s tough to expect that from this team.
