The Cleveland Guardians have spent much of the summer as one of baseball’s harder teams to read, and a deep historical analysis from The Athletic just delivered a clear verdict on what the front office should do about it.
Tim Britton examined 360 teams dating back to the 2014 season, comparing each club’s record, run differential, standing and playoff odds roughly a week before the deadline to determine how history suggests bubble teams should approach the moment. Cleveland currently sits at 55 wins and 54 losses with a run differential of negative 18, holding the second spot in the AL Central 1.5 games back while occupying the final wild card position with playoff odds sitting at 48.4 percent. According to Britton’s research, those numbers point in a specific direction.
“History says: BUY,” Britton wrote. “Last year’s Cleveland squad had an inferior record, an inferior differential, an inferior standing and inferior odds. It sold — and came back to win the division anyway. This year’s team is in good enough shape — and the AL open enough — to take a more straightforward approach.”
Britton pointed directly to last year’s Cleveland squad as part of the reasoning behind that recommendation. That team entered a similar stretch of the calendar with a worse record, a worse run differential, a worse standing and worse playoff odds than this year’s group, yet the front office chose to sell anyway and still went on to win the division. Britton argued that with this year’s roster in better overall shape and the American League as wide open as it has been in recent memory, Cleveland has more justification than it did a year ago to take what he called a more straightforward approach at the deadline.
Rather than a razor-thin gap separating contenders from pretenders, this year’s league features a cluster of teams bunched near .500, making the case for bold action less risky than it might normally seem.
Whether Antonetti and the front office heed that kind of historical argument remains to be seen. Cleveland has already made incremental moves this season, including the trade for catcher Patrick Bailey.
With the deadline now just days away, Britton’s research adds another voice to the growing chorus suggesting Cleveland has both the standing and the opportunity to make a real push before the calendar turns to August.
