Trade deadline rumors affect not only players at the major league level. It is a time when many prospects change organizations, used as chips in deals to improve the big league club.
With a talented farm system, the Cleveland Guardians have several valuable targets should they be willing to part with them. One of the most mentioned is infielder Angel Genoa, who may not have a clear path to MLB playing time in Cleveland.
Genoa is picking the right time to show what he is capable of, either to convince the Guardians he is too valuable to let go or to showcase his value to other teams. It will make him an interesting player to watch over the next week.
Ranked as the Guardians’ No. 2 overall prospect by MLB.com, Genoa is making a loud case at Triple-A since being promoted there in early May.

Genoa was moved up to Columbus from Double-A Akron shortly after second baseman Travis Bazzana was promoted to make his MLB debut on April 28. Genoa, who is primarily a shortstop, was seen as part of a potential double-play combination for the Guardians for years to come. Yet, Brayan Rocchio’s breakout season there may have changed the plans significantly.
Rocchio moved to shortstop to replace injured Gabriel Arias early in the season, which eventually led to Bazzana taking over at second base. With veteran Jose Ramirez at third base, at least for the rest of this season and likely longer, there may be no room for Genoa.
MLB.com has the 22-year-old switch-hitter ranked as the No. 39 prospect in all of baseball, which would make him a valuable commodity if the Guardians were to put him on the market. In 446 minor league games, he has a slash line of .291/.373/.428, and he already has a career-high 11 home runs this season.
Sometimes, a franchise has to make a difficult decision about parting with such a talented prospect in a trade, but if the Guardians do decide to hang on to Genoa, he could prove to be even more valuable down the line.
