Having talented rookies is the dream for MLB organizations. It represents cheap, impactful production and the potential to start building something sustainable over time.
The Cleveland Guardians certainly have their fair share of talented rookies. Travis Bazzana made the All-Star Game and is starting to heat up again; Chase DeLauter is sporting a 128 wRC+, and Petey Halpin and Khalil Watson have had their moments.
Parker Messick, however, has left a lasting impression among Guardians’ fans. He is not only their best rookie, but he has also developed into the staff ace in Cleveland.
Greg Amsinger of MLB Network ranked the 2026 rookie class in a fun exercise this week. No pitcher is ranked higher than Messick, and the left-hander checks in at fifth overall.
“At No. 5, this is the best pitcher in this rookie class. Parker Messick, as he broke into the big leagues last year, has a sub-3 ERA. I’m just honing in on his 19 starts this year. The All-Star is No. 5—best rookie in all of baseball on Greg’s list,” Amsinger said.

After another excellent start on Tuesday to guide his team to a key win, Messick’s full-season ERA is now 2.68. He has pitched 117.2 innings and has racked up 2.9 fWAR.
At this point, the All-Star lefty is not just the best rookie starter in baseball: he has developed into one of the most reliable pitchers in the league. Last year, when he put up a 2.72 ERA in 39.2 frames, the world needed him to do it for a longer stretch to fully believe in him. Well, 2026 has brought with it more than enough evidence to say that he’s an ace through and through.
The Guardians now have a 25-year-old rotation anchor with five and a half years left of cheap team control. Messick has become the type of hurler this team loves to build around.
You can even make the case that Messick has been more impactful than some of the rookies listed ahead of him by Amsinger. His arrival as a reliable top-of-the-rotation option has completely changed Cleveland’s pecking order and depth chart, not to mention the fact that it has dramatically boosted their playoff chances.
