This week, on Thursday, MLB revealed its tentative schedule for the 2027 campaign. We use the word ‘tentatively’ because there’s currently no Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in place for the next five-year period, and the likelihood of a lockout is high.
Still, the league needs to start preparing for next year, and the schedule has already been released. The Cleveland Guardians will open the year on March 25 in Chicago against the Cubs at legendary Wrigley Field.
After that road series in the Windy City and another one in Detroit, the Guardians will have their home opener on April 1: new month, old foe.
“No April Fools: Guardians 2027 Home Opener will take place on Thursday, April 1, against the New York Yankees, marking just the fifth time in franchise history that Cleveland has opened in Cleveland with the Bronx Bombers,” FOX 8’s P.J. Ziegler said.

The New York – Cleveland matchup has developed into a modern rivalry in the American League. Cleveland ousted the Yankees in the 1997 postseason en route to the World Series, where they lost at the hands of the Marlins. Then, the Bombers took care of the then-Indians in the 1998 AL Championship Series.
Cleveland took revenge in the 2007 Division Series. After that, however, it has been all Yanks.
The Bombers have eliminated the Guardians in the postseason in 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2024, the latter in the AL Championship Series. They also handed Cleveland its first sweep of the 2026 regular season back in June.
It’s clear that Cleveland wants to beat the Yankees every time they step onto the field against them, and the opposite is true, as well.
These are two of the best squads in the junior circuit at the moment, and will have a chance to battle it out next year at Progressive Field on April 1, provided that the lockout doesn’t start eating into the regular season schedule. After what happened in 2020 with the pandemic and then in 2022 with negotiations for the current agreement, it’s certainly in the cards.
Guardians fans are always eager for the next chance to beat the Yankees, so if the series goes through as initially planned, it will likely take place in front of a packed Progressive Field.
