The Cleveland Guardians are on a roll: they won their last four games of the first half before heading into the All-Star break. That streak allowed them to enter a tie with the Chicago White Sox for the top spot in the AL Central.
To fend off the Pale Hose, the Minnesota Twins, and other potential threats in the division, they need to be even better in the second half. It’s much easier said than done, though.
Fortunately, the Guardians have a strong young core and several injured players getting healthy in the upcoming weeks. One of them is superstar Jose Ramirez, identified by Tim Stebbins of MLB.com as the most important player with a strong second half in mind.
Speaking to analysts Nick Wilson and Jonathan Peterlin, former Guardian Chris Gimenez said that he believes Travis Bazzana is the one who can make or break Cleveland’s 2026 campaign. Like Ramirez, he is a crucial player for the team.
“I’m going to say Travis Bazzana, because when he came up, he was gangbusters. He was, you know, lighting the world on fire. He’s gone through a little bit of a lull, which is completely normal in your rookie year. I think if we can continue to get him going at the top of the lineup, you bring Jose back, the lineup starts to look a little bit better. But to me, it’s Travis Bazzana, trying to get himself on the right track again,” Gimenez said.

Gimenez makes a very good point because Bazzana is the Guardians’ leadoff hitter, the one in charge of kickstarting the offense. And he has been a bit off at the plate in the last couple of months, with a 67 wRC+ in July and a 79 mark in June.
He played just a handful of games in April after being called up from Triple-A, but in May, he posted a brilliant 150 wRC+ that gave fans a glimpse of what he’s capable of. Pitchers have adjusted to him, and now, it’s his turn to adjust back.
For the season as a whole, Bazzana is slashing .238/.330/.389 with seven homers, 13 stolen bases, and a 103 wRC+. Those numbers were good enough to land him a ticket to Philadelphia to play in the All-Star Game, but everybody knows he is capable of much more.
If Bazzana can return to the 120-130-wRC+ guy he was just a few weeks ago, commanding the strike zone and doing damage with his bat and his legs, the Guardians’ offense might be in for a big second half. It’s a big ‘if’, though.
