Ever since he suffered an elbow injury during a workout in spring training, Cleveland Guardians young right-hander Gavin Williams has been on the shelf, waiting to get healthy and rejoin the rotation.
He has encountered some setbacks and obstacles along the way, though.
A little over a week ago, on April 25, he reported renewed discomfort in the area and the Guardians shut him down for a few days.
This week, however, brought good news for the Guardians and their fans.
“Gavin Williams was re-evaluated by doctors yesterday and started throwing today and was pain-free. ‘On the road back,’ said manager Stephen Vogt,” Guardians insider Zack Meisel tweeted.

The fact he started throwing again is awfully encouraging and means he is closing in on a return.
There is still no official word by the Guardians regarding how long he will be out, but he still needs to throw bullpens, face hitters, and go to a rehab assignment.
That means he is still at least a couple of weeks away, depending on how his arm bounces back after each session.
Still, he is inching closer and is already pain-free, which is huge.
Williams was impressive last year as a rookie, tossing 82 innings of a solid 3.29 ERA.
A healthy Williams belongs in the Guardians rotation, no matter who is currently there, but he still needs to clear a few steps before he is declared game-ready.
This development, however, should be qualified as extremely positive for a team whose rotation has already suffered a few injuries.
