The Cleveland Guardians fell to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday to set up a crucial matchup on Sunday. The winner of Sunday’s series finale will head into next week with the AL Central lead, but even though Saturday may not have gone the Guardians’ way on the field, it was a celebratory occasion given the fact that the All-Star teams were announced.
Cleveland will be sending three players to Philadelphia for July 14th’s mid-summer classic as Parker Messick, Cade Smith, and Travis Bazzana all made their first All-Star team. All three are well deserving and will hopefully have a lot more selections in their future, but many were still bummed to see another young Guardian get snubbed despite having such a stellar breakout campaign.
Cade Cracas pointed out that the one member of the team missing from the game is shortstop Brayan Rocchio. With how vital he has been and how consistent both his bat and glove have been, it would have been easy to make a case for him to make the squad, and he’ll now have to hope for an injury replacement.
“Only member of the #Guardians that is missing from this year’s All-Star game: Brayan Rocchio. Fuel to the fire,” said Cracas.

The 25-year-old Rocchio is having a true breakout season and has been invaluable over the past month while many of the lineup’s anchors have been out injured. He has moved to the heart of the order at times and delivered a .735 OPS so far, most recently highlighted by a clutch walk-off two-run homer to deliver one of the biggest wins of the season.
In the AL, Bobby Witt will be starting at shortstop while fellow shortstop Kevin McGonigle is the only other shortstop to make the team. With only two shortstops on the roster, it’s possible Rocchio could make the team as an injury replacement even if both Witt and McGonigle wind up making the trip, especially because McGonigle also spends half his time at third base.
You never want to root for an injury or for anybody to miss the All-Star Game, but it would be fantastic to see Rocchio make the trip to Philly. For now, he just has to put his head down and keep doing what he is doing, and if the cards fall his way, perhaps we’ll see him joining his three All-Star teammates.
