The Cleveland Guardians are a young, up-and-coming team full of rookies and fresh blood. Every analysis about them this season has to start there.
Despite not really spending much in the offseason, as usual, the Guardians are currently one game behind the AL Central lead. They held it for a long time and recently surrendered it, but the season is still far from finished.
No matter what, the organization has decided to keep trusting their scouting and player development staff, giving these first-year players ample playing time to develop and become the backbone of the team.
A whopping nine players have made their MLB debut for the Guardians this year: Cooper Ingle (C/OF), Travis Bazzana (2B), Kahlil Watson (OF), Chase DeLauter (OF), Juan Brito (INF), Peyton Pallette (RHP), Will Dion (LHP), Franco Aleman (RHP), and Daniel Espino (RHP). Most of them are already among the most important players on the team.
“The nine Guardians who have made their big-league debut this season are the second most to do so before the All-Star Game in franchise history. The 2022 Guardians had 10 players make their big-league debuts before the All-Star Game,” Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com wrote.
Only the 2022 Guardians had more rookies making their MLB debut before the Midsummer Classic. What’s most impressive is that more players could potentially join this group: probably not before the All-Star Game, but in the second half.
Now, it’s time for the franchise to support these rookies and young contributors with some impact talent before the deadline. The offense is in need of a couple of reliable producers, preferably power-hitting outfielders, and to bring them in, the organization needs to get rid of potentially impactful prospects from the lower and upper-minors.
If Cleveland does this they could push for a long postseason run. If they don’t, they risk being left behind by other competitive, more aggressive American League powerhouses. It’s now or never for the Guardians, and the front office needs to rise to the occasion.
The rookies are all excellent, but they can’t be expected to do everything alone. They need some help, and they need it now before the AL Central becomes a pipe dream.
