Jim Bowden has spent decades evaluating rosters at the highest level, first as the general manager of the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals and now as one of the sharper analytical voices at The Athletic. Recently, Bowden appeared on 92.3 The Fan and delivered a bold prediction about where the AL Central race is headed.
Bowden laid out his case for why the Guardians will ultimately win the division.
“I think the Guardians are going to win this division because I think they’ve got the best and deepest starting rotation. I like the bullpen. I think the biggest question is, how do we fix the offense? I think they’ll be able to out pitch the White Sox. I think they’ll be able to hold off the Tigers, but I think they’ve got to find a way to go get another bat somewhere, somehow,” Bowden said.

The rotation Bowden references has been the clear separator between Cleveland and the rest of the division all season. Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Parker Messick, Slade Cecconi and Joey Cantillo have made every single start since Opening Day, a feat no other team in baseball can claim, and the group carries one of the better ERA marks in the American League over the last month. Cade Smith’s major league-leading 26 saves and Colin Holderman’s consistency have given the Guardians a lockdown element in the late innings that Chicago simply cannot match. The White Sox sit one game ahead in the standings, but their starting pitching has carried an ERA nearly two full runs higher than Cleveland’s during the month of June.
Cleveland ranks near the bottom of the American League in slugging percentage and has managed runs at a below-average clip even during stretches when the pitching staff has been outstanding. With Jose Ramirez still weeks away from returning after hamate surgery and Angel Martinez also on the injured list, the front office faces a real decision about whether to push its chips in before August 3 or trust the roster it has to hold the line until its injured players return.
With a four-game series against Chicago beginning Thursday at Progressive Field, the next several days could go a long way toward determining whether Bowden’s prediction proves accurate. A winning series against the White Sox would give Cleveland first place outright and provide the kind of momentum that makes the offensive questions feel considerably more manageable heading into the second half.
