Tuesday night’s error by Cooper Ingle prompted a wave of reaction from Cleveland fans, some of whom called for the rookie to be pulled from the outfield entirely after his costly mental lapse against Texas. Ken Carman pushed back against that overreaction on his morning show Wednesday.
Carman addressed the calls to bench Ingle, saying he just had a ‘brain fart.’
“He’s not an outfielder by trade. He just had a brain fart. There are people saying to bench him. I’m not gonna bench him over that. It was a dumb thing. He knows it’s a dumb thing. Do I need to punish him publicly and rub his nose in it?” Carman asked.

The organization began giving him outfield reps at Columbus earlier this season specifically to create a path for his bat to reach the lineup, not because anyone considered him a natural fit in the corner spots. He is still learning the new position at the major league level, as he has spent most of his career as a catcher.
Vogt echoed the same sentiment in his own comments Tuesday night, pledging to run Ingle back out there at his next opportunity and refusing to hold the play against him. Austin Hedges, who spent a long stretch with the rookie after the game, reinforced that message in the clubhouse by sharing his own long history of mistakes at the major league level. The consistency of that response across the manager, the veterans and now the local media reflects a clear organizational belief that punishing Ingle publicly would do far more damage than the error itself.
With the Guardians still needing Ingle’s bat in the lineup and no better outfield options readily available, the path forward appears to be exactly what Vogt and Carman both described. Get back out there and move on.
