The Cleveland Guardians finally took a much-needed step toward strengthening their lineup in the middle of their injury crisis on Thursday, when it was revealed that they were going to call up catching/outfield prospect Cooper Ingle. On Friday, they executed the roster move that made it official.
Cleveland designated outfielder Stuart Fairchild for assignment to accommodate Ingle on the roster. The writing was on the wall, given his 2026 performance in the majors.

Ingle got the call after a fantastic showing for Triple-A Columbus this year. He hit .284 (50-for-176) and led the organization’s farm system with a .551 slugging percentage.
His .967 OPS is the third-best in the International League. Ingle has hit 12 home runs for Columbus, including three in one game last week.
Ingle offers several exciting traits to Cleveland’s lineup, most notably the ability to get on base, as his .416 OBP in Triple-A attests, and his power, highlighted by that slugging percentage. His 150 wRC+ was elite and certainly earned him his promotion.
The rookie’s name was in Friday’s lineup to make his MLB debut, hitting fifth as the designated hitter. That’s believed to be his home for as long as he’s up, with some starts in the outfield corners and behind the plate sprinkled in.
As for Fairchild, he had been up for a few weeks but ultimately didn’t make enough consistent contact to keep his roster spot. His 95 wRC+ was not bad, but it was aided by a high OBP (.407) in a small sample. He hit .158, didn’t have any extra-base hits in 27 trips to the plate, and struck out in 51.9 percent of his plate appearances.
There’s no word on Fairchild’s future in the organization. The Guardians likely would love to keep him around as minor league depth if he makes it through waivers unclaimed.
The Ingle era is now underway in Cleveland, as his potent bat could go a long way toward making the Guardians’ lineup more productive. It’s a small but firm step in the right direction, as he had been ready for a while, at least offensively.
