The Cleveland Guardians somehow beat Tarik Skubal on Saturday and moved to 6-0 on the year against the Detroit Tigers despite a third of the lineup exiting the game with injuries. It’s hard for fans to even get excited about this victory knowing all the carnage that took place, but the show goes on and the team has to find a way to patch things together starting on Sunday.
Chase DeLauter exited the game with a rib contusion and Angel Martinez left with a foot contusion, but manager Steven Vogt downplayed the severity of their injuries. Martinez is day-to-day while DeLauter’s injury could be a bit more severe but still nothing devastating that keeps him out long term.
The same cannot be said for Jose Ramirez, who fractured his hamate bone, which is typically a six-to-eight week injury. There are plenty of options in Triple-A to call up when Ramirez inevitably gets placed on the IL.
“Cleveland #Guardians options to call up at Triple-A Columbus currently on the 40-man. C Bo Naylor, INF Juan Brito, INF Angel Genao, OF Petey Halpin, OF CJ Kayfus, OF George Valera, OF Kahlil Watson, INF Gabriel (Arias) currently on the 60-day IL is rehabbing in Columbus,” said Guardians Prospective.

Martinez fouled Skubal’s first pitch of the game off his foot and DeLauter crashed into the outfield wall trying to make a catch. They could both be in the lineup next week, but losing Ramirez is absolutely devastating and the front office isn’t going to find one guy to replace what Ramirez brings to the table. It’s going to have to be a collective effort, so we’ll see if the Guardians get creative over the next day or two.
Arias is raking in Triple-A and would be a sensible solution here, perhaps platooning a bit with Daniel Schneemann for righty/lefty coverage. If DeLauter needs to go on the IL, he will be much easier to replace given the outfield depth in the organization, but Ramirez’s absence is going to be much trickier.
There’s no way to sugarcoat all of this. The Guardians have to lock in, because this is going to be a huge wake-up call and the team’s response to it could make or break the season.
