The Cleveland Guardians got this weekend’s crucial series with the Detroit Tigers off to a great start with a 3-2 victory on Friday, but even the biggest doomers couldn’t have predicted how poorly Saturday would have gone. The Guardians found a way to win 3-1 in Tarik Skubal’s return, but at what cost?
Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez left the game due to injury, but the most concerning is the fact that star third baseman Jose Ramirez also checked out as Cleveland somehow won without three key starters. It didn’t look great at the time, and now that more information has come out, it’s tough for the fans to feel any excitement about today’s win at all.
Dr. Jesse Morse added some context to the news that Ramirez suffered a fracture to his left hamate bone. He gave an initial prognosis of six-to-eight weeks before a potential return and noted that his power may not be the same until next season.
“José Ramírez – left hamate bone fracture. These usually take 6-8 weeks to return to the field. Also good chance his power won’t be 100% until 2027. 3 other players suffered this fracture earlier this year: Corbin Carroll, Francisco Lindor, Jackson Holliday,” said Morse.

The craziest part of this situation is that Ramirez, who is one of the league’s true ironmen, broke his right hamate bone seven years ago to the day. The previous injury was the only time Ramirez has been on the injured list in his career, and this will now be a devastating deja vu for Guardians fans.
It’s tough to move on and pick up the pieces given how crucial he is to the success of this offense. Guys like Daniel Schneemann and potentially Gabriel Arias, who has been raking during his rehab assignment, could be tasked with handling Ramirez’s big workload and will suddenly be under a microscope.
A lot of questions have to be answered, but the team has to take it one day at a time. This is devastating no matter how you look at it, and hopefully Ramirez rests up and the team finds a way to path things together in the aggregate.
