The Cleveland Guardians couldn’t complete the sweep in New York on Thursday, falling 2-1 to the Yankees after taking Games 1 and 2 of their series. Slade Cecconi was impressive on the mound, but the offense couldn’t do much against the home team in this one.
Cecconi has improved dramatically and now boasts a 4.92 ERA after limiting the Yankees to one run in six innings on Thursday. He surrendered four hits and walked one hitter, striking out four.

Unfortunately, Carlos Rodon’s brilliance for the Yankees resulted in a no-decision for both hurlers. Rodon also pitched six frames, surrendering two hits and three walks while punching out seven.
Codi Heuer took over Cecconi in the seventh with the game tied and immediately got the first out of the inning, but then walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. and watched as he stole second base. Then, he threw a wild pitch and the Yanks’ second baseman advanced to third. From there, he scored on a two-out, RBI single by Ryan McMahon.
Before that, the Guardians had gone ahead in the fourth frame. Jose Ramirez led the inning off with a single and then stole his league-leading 22nd base, just a day after getting his 21st. He got to the hot corner on an Angel Martinez flyout and scored on Stuart Fairchild’s RBI single.
The Yankees didn’t take long to get in the game, though. They tied things in the bottom part of the fourth: with Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger both in scoring position, Chisholm hit a sac fly in which Goldschmidt scored, but Bellinger was also tagged out at third.
David Fry went 0-for-3 as the Guardians’ leadoff hitter, but it wasn’t just him: Cleveland was limited to just two hits all afternoon. One of them was courtesy of the red-hot Ramirez, and the other one was Fairchild’s RBI knock.
The offense, to this point, had enjoyed a nice series, but Rodon and the Yankees’ bullpen, namely Brent Headrick, Fernando Cruz, and David Bednar, dominated the Guardians in the finale.
The 36-28 Guardians will now travel to Texas to face the Rangers in a three-game set over the weekend.
