The Cleveland Guardians have been one of the best stories in baseball for a while now, and first baseman Rhys Hoskins just put into words what everyone around this team already knows. Speaking to reporters in New York, Hoskins reveals exactly why this team is special.
“Yeah, I don’t think anyone in that clubhouse is surprised about where we’re at, but you know, I think we also… it’s pretty easy to walk around with a chip on our shoulder, because of the way that maybe the rest of the league sees us. And think that’s something that we always have. We really enjoy competing for each other, and that’s something that is kind of felt even from across the way, and just happy to be a part of that right now,” Hoskins said.

That chip on the shoulder mentality is real, and it comes from years of Cleveland being overlooked, underestimated, and counted out by analysts and national media who never quite respect what this organization has built. The Guardians have turned that disrespect into fuel, and Hoskins is describing a clubhouse that feeds off of it collectively rather than letting it become a distraction.
The part about competing for each other is what separates good teams from great ones. Talent alone does not win championships. Chemistry does. Accountability does. A genuine investment in the player next to you does. When a veteran like Hoskins steps into a new environment and immediately feels that kind of culture coming from across the clubhouse, that is not something a coaching staff can fake or manufacture through a motivational speech. It is either there or it is not, and in Cleveland it clearly is.
The Guardians have consistently outperformed expectations because of exactly what Hoskins is describing. This is not a roster built on massive payrolls or superstar free agent signings. This is a group of players who trust each other, play hard for each other, and carry a collective edge that makes them genuinely difficult to beat night in and night out.
Hoskins is a welcomed voice in that clubhouse. He has been around winning baseball and knows what it looks like from the inside. The fact that he is already feeling what makes Cleveland different after being here a short time is a strong signal that this team is not going anywhere.
The rest of the league may keep sleeping on the Guardians. That is perfectly fine with the guys in that clubhouse.
