Thanks to a solid outing by Gavin Williams and another productive night at the plate, the Cleveland Guardians beat the New York Yankees 5-4 on Wednesday to take Game 2 of the series in the Bronx. It’s safe to say that the club has bounced back nicely after its two straight weekend losses, winning Tuesday’s opener as well as Wednesday’s affair.
Williams allowed three runs in 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out six to get the win. He conceded four hits, including a couple of homers, but kept one of MLB’s best lineups in check.

The real star of the night, however, was Kyle Manzardo. The lefty slugger hit a home run and two doubles and keeps trending in the right direction, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. His OPS is up to a passable .736, an amazing number considering his rough start.

Both teams showed their fair share of power at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The Guardians scored first, when Manzardo hit his second round-tripper in as many days in the second inning against Gerrit Cole, who was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs in 5.1 frames.
In the bottom of the second, Williams surrendered a game-tying home run to Jazz Chisholm Jr., and lost control of the game for a bit after that, conceding a single to Jose Caballero and throwing a wild pitch. He regained his composure and got out of the inning without further damage, though.
With Jose Ramirez on base in the fourth frame, Rhys Hoskins belted his sixth homer of the year to put Cleveland ahead 3-1. They got amazing results against the Yankees’ ace.
Caballero homered in the bottom of the inning to put the Yankees just one run behind. Ramirez, however, kept the foot on the gas after his amazing game on Tuesday and left the yard for the ninth time in the season. At that point, in the sixth inning, it was 4-2 Cleveland.
Cody Bellinger drove in Ben Rice in the bottom of the seventh with a sac fly, cutting the deficit to just one run once again. These Guardians, however, are pesky.
After Manzardo hit a double, he scored Cleveland’s fifth run of the night on Hoskins’ sharp single to left field against Paul Blackburn in the eighth inning.
Tim Herrin, Colin Holderman, and Hunter Gaddis combined to shut down the Yankees’ vaunted offense in the late innings to give the ball to closer Cade Smith. The right-hander allowed a late run in the ninth, but hung on to get the save and secure the Guardians’ 36th of the season against just 27 losses.
J-Ram homered and went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Hoskins drove in three runs.
Cleveland will go for the sweep on Thursday’s matinee, sending Slade Cecconi to the mound to face left-hander Carlos Rodon.
