The Cleveland Guardians have dropped the first two games of their series against the Washington Nationals this week. If we go back to the weekend, they have now lost three of their last four.
That came after one of the most productive stretches of the season for Cleveland, where they racked up seven consecutive wins, and everything seemed to click. That’s life in the major leagues, though: sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down.
Right now, the Guardians’ offense has certainly seen better days. Manager Stephen Vogt analyzed the last few games and made it clear that he still has faith in his players.
He did say that they need to play better, though.
“We’ve faced some really good arms, but we need to be better. We gotta get back on our plan, get back to having quality at-bats. It feels really bad right now after those two losses. If we allow that to continue to be a mindset, it can spiral. We’re coming off a great road trip. It’s been two tough losses, that’s the truth, that’s it. It’s been two tough losses. We’re right back at it tomorrow,” Vogt said.

The offense has reverted to being ice-cold after an impressive stretch. They have scored nine runs in their last five, fewer than two per game. That’s not going to cut it, which is why Vogt is emphasizing the importance of having quality at-bats.
Sure, facing tough pitchers always complicates things, but everything starts with the count. Hitters need to avoid swinging at bad pitches and attack hittable strikes in the fat part of the zone. Sure, it sounds easy, but believe us: it’s not. It’s the key for an offensive turnaround, though.
Once Guardians’ hitters can work better, more favorable counts, they will start seeing more meatballs and hittable strikes. From there, it’s a matter of putting some good swings, and these young, talented hitters have shown they can do that.
Despite their recent slide, the Guardians remain the team to beat in the AL Central and one of the best squads in the American League. It’s time to start playing like it again.
