The Cleveland Guardians called up left-hander Logan Allen on Sunday to help soak up some innings in the middle of a long stretch of games. He did just that on Monday, racking up 83 pitches and covering four solid frames in a loss at the hands of the Washington Nationals.
Yes, Cleveland fell 10-2, but those four innings Allen was able to complete helped keep the bullpen fresh ahead of the next two games of the Nationals series. They were invaluable.
Unfortunately for him, Cleveland needs more innings for Tuesday and Wednesday, and since Allen will be unavailable those days due to his heavy workload on Monday, he has been sent to Triple-A Columbus. The Guardians announced that fellow hurler Will Dion will take his place.
“We’ve selected Will Dion from the [Columbus Clippers],” GuardsInsider posted.

Dion, 26, was drafted in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB Draft as a starting pitcher. He was used in that role until last year, when he began seeing some regular bullpen action.
This year, he has been a multi-inning reliever exclusively, and while his 4.50 ERA might not seem overly exciting, his five walks and 36 strikeouts definitely are.
In fact, Dion has been so good at limiting the free passes and getting swings and misses that his Fielding Independent Pitching, or FIP, is an elite 1.83. He should thrive in front of the Guardians’ solid infield defense.
Dion has pitched 15 games for Columbus this year, covering 26 frames. Last year, he posted a 4.09 ERA in 99 innings at the same level.
It will be his first chance to impress and potentially earn a major role with the team going forward. He is talented, and the move to the bullpen appears to have had a positive effect on his stuff.
His fastball doesn’t have elite velo, sitting more in the low-90s, but plays up because of its riding life. He also throws a sinker, a cutter, a slider, a curveball, and a changeup.
He went from being a backend starter to a solid multi-inning relief prospect. No, he’s probably no star in the making, but he can help, and the Guardians needed another lefty in the bullpen after Erik Sabrowski’s injury.
