The Cleveland Guardians have been the best and most consistent team in the AL Central for the better part of the new millennium. If we count the last 10 years, they have no competitors in their division.
No, they haven’t won a World Series since 1948. But they have been competitive almost every year for a long time now, and that’s also valuable. That’s also relevant. The title is the ultimate goal, yes, but it shouldn’t be the only thing considered in a thorough analysis.
“Since 2016, Cleveland has only finished worse than 2nd in the AL Central once, while winning the division 7 times. That lone year (2023), they finished third and won the draft lottery, wherein they drafted Travis Bazzana,” Michael Bode said.

That 2016 season, the Guardians made it all the way to the World Series. They lost it, but the dream didn’t end there. They won their division more often than not since that year, won some playoff series, and even reached the AL Championship Series in 2024.
They have done this with one of the lowest payrolls in baseball almost every year. In the past offseason, they were among the organizations that spent the fewest, yet here they are, first in the AL Central with a 32-23 record and a 4.5-game lead over the second-placed team, the Chicago White Sox.
The Guardians might not spend like your typical postseason contender, and that can be frustrating at times. However, they draft well, they have amazing player development and scouting departments, and they have a knack for spotting and nurturing talent out of nowhere. In short, no team in baseball is as good as the Guardians at optimizing resources, perhaps not even the Tampa Bay Rays.
Of course, luck was on their side when they won the lottery three years ago, and they took a future star in Bazzana. Today, they are reaping the benefits. The truth is that they already had an amazing farm system even before the talented infielder was taken, though.
We have said it before, and we will say it again: the roster that president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti has put in place seems good and deep enough to make a serious run at the title this year if they can show some aggressiveness at the deadline.
