The main takeaway from the Cleveland Guardians’ 2026 season so far has been the arrival of a handful of incredible young talents. Fans had heard about how talented some of the top prospects were over the past few years, but the developmental system is finally producing tangible results and is a key reason why the Guardians are sitting atop the AL Central at 31-23.
Young pitchers such as Parker Messick and Gavin Williams have clearly taken the next steps in their development and could give this organization a pair of aces to build around for the near future. As great as they have been, the need for young talent to emerge at the plate was greater than the need for emerging talent on the mound, which is why two key standouts have local media legend Bruce Drennan in a euphoric state.
During a recent episode of Bonus Time, Drennan raved about Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana. The two recent first-round picks were Cleveland’s best offensive prospects coming into this campaign, and both have shown early signs of being potential superstars for many years to come.
“The ceiling with these kids is so amazing. Now, all of the skeptics that said the Guardians don’t spend money, this is why. Because we have to find out about these kids,” said Drennan.

The only thing that held DeLauter back during his years in the minors was his inability to stay healthy. Now that he is out there every day and batting third in the lineup with a future Hall of Famer in front of him, the fans are seeing what made the front office confident enough to call him up to make his MLB debut in the Wild Card series last season.
Bazzana has had sky-high expectations from the minute he was drafted first overall in 2024, and so far he is living up to those expectations. He has a .385 on-base percentage and seven steals through 23 games while flashing future Gold Glove potential at second base. He has been so impressive that Stephen Vogt has already moved him up to the leadoff spot, which is unlike him given how he likes to ease rookies into the big leagues.
Cleveland may have seen its seven-game winning streak come to an unfortunate end on Saturday, but with Messick on the bump on Sunday, the Guardians will have a good chance to get back on that horse and leave Philadelphia with another series victory.
