The Cleveland Guardians opened the year with Steven Kwan as their leadoff hitter, as has been the case for the better part of the last four seasons before 2026. He occupied that slot in the lineup in each one of the games he played until May 16.
That day, manager Stephen Vogt decided to take him out of the top of the order and bump him to sixth to give him a mental breather amid a brutal slump. He started to play better, while hitters such as Daniel Schneemann or Angel Martinez were used in the first spot of the lineup.
Travis Bazzana, meanwhile, waited for his chance. With an elite .391 OBP and a 14.1 percent walk rate heading into Saturday, he has shown the tools to be the perfect leadoff guy for Cleveland. He has a much better ability to get on base than Martinez and is much hotter than the ice-cold Schneemann at the moment.
Vogt, however, likes to ease rookies in when thinking about certain responsibilities and roles. He doesn’t like to throw them into the fire. Bazzana, however, has shown he is more than ready for the challenge and, for the first time in 2026, will occupy the Guardians’ leadoff spot.
“#Guardians Travis Bazzana will make his first appearance as the leadoff man in a Cleveland uniform,” Horodyski wrote.

Kwan has been alternating between the sixth and seventh slots after being removed from his usual assignment, but for the first time in 2026, he has been sent to the eighth position in the lineup. He is hitting .199 for the season with a 68 OPS+, both well below the league average.
Bazzana will get a chance to show he has what it takes to be Cleveland’s leadoff hitter of the future. He has contact, he has power, and above all things, he knows the strike zone and is not easily fooled by pitches outside of it.
Having a player who gets on base around 40 percent of the time will do wonders for the Guardians’ offense, as excellent hitters such as Jose Ramirez, Chase DeLauter, and Angel Martinez will find more RBI opportunities.
This is the right move for Cleveland as an organization. Hopefully, it’s a permanent one as long as Bazzana’s performance warrants it.
