The development of former top prospects such as Parker Messick, Chase DeLauter, and Travis Bazzana has been the story of the Cleveland Guardians so far in 2026. This team’s young talent has exploded onto the scene, but as great as the rookies and second-year sensations have been, none of this early-season success would be possible without Gavin Williams quietly turning into an ace.
The Guardians won their seventh game in a row on Friday largely thanks to Williams’ eight scoreless innings against the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1-0 victory. It was his seventh win of the year and lowered his ERA to 3.25 while completing at least six innings for the seventh consecutive start as well.
Cleveland.com’s Joe Noga shouted out Williams for the strikeouts. He pointed out that this was Williams’ seventh career ten-strikeout game, as well as his third in his last ten starts.
“Make it 7 career 10-strikeout games for Gavin Williams. He whiffs Trea Turner in the sixth and gets Kyle Schwarber looking. Still scoreless at The Bank,” Noga wrote.

The offense has shouldered the brunt of the blame over the past couple of years and was viewed as the reason the Guardians fell short in the ALCS in 2024 and Wild Card round last season. While the offense certainly deserved that blame, the rotation that carried the Guardians through the regular season over the past two years failed to show up in the postseason consistently.
Aces are trump cards in October, and the Guardians didn’t have one. They now might have two in Williams and Messick, which would completely change the trajectory of the franchise.
Slade Cecconi and Tanner Bibee got off to slow starts this season, but even they are starting to round into form. The starting rotation doesn’t have a weak link right now, and when you combine that with an offense that is rounding into form, that’s exactly how you get long winning streaks.
Cleveland is showing early signs of being a legitimate contender in a wide open American League. We’ll see over the coming weeks if this recent stretch is more than just a hot streak.
