The Cleveland Guardians just completed a four-game sweep over the Detroit Tigers, one of their main foes in the race for the AL Central, at Comerica Park. They beat them in every possible way this week: with power, coming from behind, with elite pitching performances, with the bullpen holding on, in ugly games, with small ball, and more.
Cleveland hadn’t swept Detroit in a four-game set since 2019 at Progressive Field. It hadn’t happened in Detroit since 2017. You can see that the Guardians not only beat recent history, but they also reached a 30-22 record that cements them as the top team in the AL Central. In the process, they sent the 20-31 Tigers to last place, 9.5 games behind.
“Anytime you win a 4-game series, it’s tough. It’s tough to win a 4 game series, let alone sweep it. And (I’m) just really proud of the way our guys kept their focus, kept going. We’re in the middle of 13 (games) in a row, and after, you know, a couple of emotional wins back to back, it could be easy to show up today, you know, on your heels. But our guys came out ready to rock,” manager Stephen Vogt said after the game.
#Guardians manager Stephen Vogt in Detroit on Cleveland’s 4 game sweep of the Tigers:

Before the start of the season, most fans, analysts, and experts considered Detroit the favorite to win the division. They were competitive for a while. However, with Tarik Skubal’s injury, they have looked vulnerable and have now lost six straight games.
The Guardians, of course, are on the opposite end of that trend: they have won six consecutive games and look like the best team in the division by a country mile at the moment. In fact, the only other squad that has shown a modicum of consistency in recent games, besides Cleveland, is actually the Chicago White Sox.
As Vogt said, the Guardians earned a couple of ’emotional’ wins in their series in Detroit, most notably on Wednesday when they failed to support Tanner Bibee’s incredible effort but came back to tie the game in the ninth innings and win it in the tenth. Those can be draining for a team, but they showed up on Thursday in an afternoon game, ready to compete. And they did.
This Guardians team is special, and may just have what it takes to go really far in 2026. They might need to make a move or two at the deadline, but Cleveland’s core is among the strongest in the American League.
